Conquer the
Giants in Your Life
And Live in
Victory for a Change
by Pastor John Hamel
"David
took the Philistine's head and brought it to Jerusalem.
But the giant's weapons he placed in his own tent."
(1Samuel 17:54
Message Bible)
Millions
of people worldwide are desperately concerned about nuclear bombs releasing
radioactive material into the atmosphere. Hardly a soul is unfamiliar
with all the talk of weapons of mass destruction, chemical and biological warfare. This present evil world is indeed full of
the most dangerous and deadly weapons ever known to man.
However,
as Believers in Christ and the Bible, we should not be nearly
as concerned about the world's weaponry as we should be about the weapons
of our own spiritual warfare. The weapons of our warfare are not carnal and were not created for physical
destruction. (2Corinthians 10:4,5) Our weapons are given for
the purpose of spiritual warfare victory.
Our
God-given weapons contain a power that is ever
present, yet unseen. This power is dangerous and deadly
indeed to the demonic principalities and powers that
would hinder us. This power can deliver us from any evil and any
thing that would attempt to bind us and bring us to ruin.
The
power that I refer to is the power of Almighty God. This power
is readily available to every Believer. However, there are some things
that need to be done by faith in order
to set the laws that govern God's power into operation.
When
King David was just a young shepherd boy he knew how to set these laws in
motion. As a matter of fact it was through the operation of these
laws that he was able to remove Goliath's head.
Every Born Again
Believer can take these same simple steps and conquer the giants in their
lives, whether those giants are physical, financial, emotional, academic,
family, job-related, etc.
Anyone
who will dare to do what David did will get what David got ... one
giant of a victory.
FIRST,
David spoke the solution to his problem.
"This very day GOD is handing you over to me. I'm about to
kill you, cut off your head, and serve up your body and the bodies of your
Philistine buddies to the crows and coyotes. The whole earth will know that
there's an extraordinary God in Israel."
(1Samuel 17:46 Message
Bible)
Had
David constantly complained about the magnitude of his gigantic problem,
that giant would have continued to grow even larger in his estimation. David knew the key to defeating this
giant was to get his own words in line with God's Word. Knowing his
own strength was useless against Goliath, he immediately reverted to God's
strength.
Young David knew that
God's strength is released through the human mouth. (Proverbs
18:21; Mark 11:23)
David was accustomed to listening to the voice within that said, "Talk
solution, not problem." So David looked at Goliath and spoke by
faith, "Heads up, big fella. You
just met the widow-maker. Excuse me while I re-load. We’re just
a stone’s throw away from take down time."
SECOND,
David acted out his spoken faith.
"David reached into his pocket for a stone, slung it, and
hit the Philistine hard in the forehead, embedding the stone deeply. The
Philistine crashed, facedown in the dirt."
(1Samuel 17:49 Message
Bible)
David
ignored the voice of reason that said,
"Rule number one. Never take on giants with a
slingshot."
Rather, he chose to listen to the
inward voice that said, "You can
do this. Just don't get into fear. Say
what I tell you to say and do what I tell you to do. I'll show you
how to take his big dumb head off with his own sword."
The
same is true for all New Testament Believers. By talking our faith
and acting out our faith, the Holy Spirit will show us how to cut the
devil's head off with the same sword he's threatening us
with.
David no sooner said it than he did it.
"Then David
ran up to the Philistine and stood over him, pulled the giant's sword from
its sheath, and finished the job by cutting off his head. When the
Philistines saw that their great champion was dead, they scattered, running
for their lives." (1 Samuel 17:51
Message Bible)
Have
you ever noticed in this narrative that David took out his biggest problem
first and all the other little problems simply ran away? Any Believer
can do this. Simply say what God says in the Bible about your
needs and circumstances. Then act like you believe what you are
saying is in the process of coming to pass. This is the Bible way of
conquering every problem, big or small.
Someone
might be thinking, "You know, Pastor, I can see from the Bible that
faith works by what I say and what I do. However, I've done something
so dumb, so foolish, I just don't think God can forgive me. I think I've destroyed my
capacity for operating in faith."
I would simply say to you,
"Not true. Remember the Prodigal Son."
You'll want to read the whole narrative in Luke chapter 15, but you
will recall how badly the Prodigal Son blew it as well. He actually
used these same steps to get right with his Father.
FIRST,
he, too, spoke the solution to his problem.
"I'm
going back to my father. I'll say to him, Father,
I've sinned against God, I've sinned before you."
(Luke 15:18
Message Bible)
Once
this backslidden young man spoke forth his solution, like David did, he
took the next step, like David did.
SECOND,
he acted out what he said he was going to do.
"He got right
up and went home to his father. When he was still a long way off, his
father saw him. His heart pounding, he ran out, embraced him, and kissed
him. ... And they began to have a wonderful time"
(Luke 15:20,
24 Message Bible)
If
you'll do what he did, you'll get what he got. He picked himself up out
of the pigpen of sin and went right back to the Father just as he said he
would. The Father greeted him, heart pounding, embracing him, kissing him. The rest of their lives together was wonderful.
Having
fallen into sin or being backslidden is no excuse for not taking the steps
that David and the Prodigal Son took into victory. You can use these
steps to get right with God and then re-use them to reign with God.
Satan doesn't want you to know this. He knows that by you getting a
hold of these truths, he's going to end up lying face down in the dirt like
Goliath did. He knows you'll have him repeating Goliath's last words
spoken as he lay facedown at young David's feet, stone between his
eyes, "Boy, that was the last thing
that ever came into my head."
Be
blessed as you TALK your faith and ACT your faith.
It's God's shock
and awe strategy for the giants in your life.
