Need Wisdom?
Coming Right Up

by Pastor John Hamel

Testimonial: "It happened, Pastor. Wisdom came right up. Do you know the way we have thoughts and come up with ideas from our 'head', so to say?  Well, this was different. This actually came from my 'heart', so to say. I can confidently say my head wasn't involved. It just came right up out of me. I thought to myself, 'Hey, that seems like it was already there just waiting to come up.'  Would you like to know what the wisdom was, Pastor? The Holy Spirit said to me, 'Before there is a problem, in God there is already a solution.'" MFB, Botswana

"Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.  Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honor, when thou dost embrace her.” (Proverbs 4:7,8)

The Bible calls wisdom the “principal thing.”  This means that wisdom is the most important thing in life.  To have wisdom is to have understanding of what is true and what is right and the ability to put it into practice.  Simply put, it’s practical application of knowledge.  Sometimes it comes naturally, sometimes it comes supernaturally.

You’ve clicked on this article because you want to do what is true and what is right.  Most likely you have a need and are looking for God to help you.  Well, you’ve come to the right place.  God can and will help you.  Of course, He’s God, so He gets to lay down the ground rules.  God’s help never comes on our terms.  It always and only comes on His terms.

Possibly you need wisdom concerning your marriage or children.  You may need wisdom concerning a job change, going to school or making a major financial investment.  Whatever your need, God agrees to help you as you take the following steps.

First, you must make Jesus the Lord and Savior of your life.  You do this by simply saying, “Jesus, You’re my choice.” (Romans 10:13) You simply don’t qualify for Father God’s help unless you belong to His Forever Family. (John 1:12)

You’ll want to receive the Holy Spirit Baptism as well.  This is an added measure of wisdom and power that is promised to all of God’s children. (Acts 1:8)  Once you have become Born Again and filled with the Holy Spirit, you become a prime candidate for the wisdom of God.  I’m assuming that you know enough to keep the sin out of your life, too.  Now you’re ready to take the next step.

Ask God to give you wisdom for your need.  God wants you to ask Him.  He yearns to help you.  Here’s what the Bible says.

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that gives to all men liberally, and upbraids not; and it shall be given him.  But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering … a double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.” (James 1:5-8)

You can do that something like this.  “Father, You see what I’m facing.  I need You to please tell me what to do.  I ask You to give me wisdom in this matter, in Jesus’ Name.”  The Bible says that whatever you ask, you will receive, as long as it’s legal, moral and Scriptural. (John 15:7)  You must also ask in the Name of Jesus. (John 16:23)

Once you have prayed that prayer, you must EXPECT God to do as you’ve asked.  The Scripture you just read reveals that double-mindedness, or doubting, blocks the spout where the wisdom comes out.

At first it might seem as if God didn’t even hear you.  Have confidence.  Trust Him.  He heard every single word.  He’s going to give you the wisdom you need but you’re going to have to keep your heart fixed upon Him.  The best way to do this is to pull out your Bible whenever you can and read a few verses.  If you have time, read a few chapters.  Stick with the New Testament at first.  The New Testament is written to Believers today.

Something very interesting and supernatural occurs as you are reading your Bible.  Once you have read the following verse of Scripture, I will explain it to you.

“The Word of God is quick [alive] and powerful … and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)

Now I’ll explain what happens.  The Bible is the only living Book in the world.  It is literally alive because God’s Spirit is both within it and upon it.  As you both read and hear the living Word of God, the Spirit within that Word is actually able to discern what your needs are and how to meet them.  As the Spirit within and upon the Word of God discerns what you have need of, He’ll begin to quicken to you exactly what it is you need to do to cooperate with Him.  This is entirely supernatural.

The same Holy Spirit Who abides within and upon the Word of God, also abides within and upon you.  That is, if you have been Born Again and received the Holy Spirit Baptism as mentioned above.

The more time you spend in God’s Word, the more sensitive you will become to His Spirit.  This is when you’ll begin to “pick up” His instruction from within your own human spirit.  The Holy Spirit lives in your human spirit.  Therefore, it is from there that you will hear His voice.  His wisdom will rise up from within you.  It won’t come from your head.  He doesn’t live in your head.  His wisdom will rise up from down in your belly, down in your spirit.  It will flow upwards like an artesian well.  Once you experience this, you’ll never forget it.

This is the experience Jesus was referring to one day in Jerusalem when He stood to His feet and shouted out loud, “He that believes on Me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.  [But this spake He of the Spirit, which they that believe on Him should receive …].” (John 7:38,39)

The more you spend time reading the Bible and the more you spend time praising and worshipping God, the more you’ll hear His voice.  It will come right up out of your spirit.

God inhabits His Word through the agency of the Holy Spirit.  God inhabits your human spirit through the agency of the Holy Spirit.  (If Jesus is your Lord, that is.)  God also inhabits your praises when you lift your hands and voice and begin to tell Him how much you love Him and trust Him. (Psalm 22:3)  So you can see the importance of reading the Bible and spending a little time each day worshipping God for His goodness if you need wisdom.  His wisdom is not only in His Word.  His wisdom is also in your spirit.  His wisdom will rise up from within as you worship Him.

Don’t try to figure out how this is possible just believe it.  Don’t waste your time analyzing it.  Make the most of your time utilizing it.  Just believe that He’s in you.  When He came to live in you, He didn’t leave all of His wisdom behind.  He brought it with Him.  Because He’s in you, wisdom is in you.

“But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:” (1 Corinthians 1:30)

The Scripture is clear.  Because Jesus lives in you, wisdom lives in you.  Tap into it by spending some time hanging out in God’s Word.  Spend some time worshipping God, the Source of all wisdom.  The more time you spend doing this, the quicker your answer will “pop up” out of your spirit.  It could be a verse of Scripture, it could be peace or unrest about a decision you made, or it could also be His still small voice, possibly His more authoritative voice.

As I said, once this happens to you, you’ll never forget the experience.  It’s as if an elevator lifts up from your belly, carrying the answer into your mind.  You can almost “feel” it coming up.

That’s why I say, “Need Wisdom?  Coming Right Up!”
